# Connect Octopus

> API key, export MPAN, and meter serial for Agile export data.

PilotWatt needs your **personal Octopus API key** plus the **export electricity meter** — not your home import meter.

  This differs from older guides that only asked for an account number. PilotWatt reads half-hourly export consumption and Agile rates using MPAN + serial from the developer examples.

## Step 1 — API key

1. Go to [octopus.energy/dashboard/developer](https://octopus.energy/dashboard/developer/)
2. Sign in
3. Copy your **personal API key** from the developer page

## Step 2 — Export MPAN and meter serial

On the same developer page:

1. Scroll to **Examples → Consumption → Electricity**
2. Find the **export** meter block (often the second electricity example)
3. Copy that block's **MPAN** and **meter serial number**

Use the export meter — not the import meter for your home supply.

## Step 3 — Enter in PilotWatt

**Onboarding:** Octopus step fields for API key, MPAN, and serial.

**Settings:** **Settings → Octopus Energy → Advanced**.

Click **Save Octopus settings**. Agile rates should appear on Home and Planner within 30 minutes (or immediately if rates are cached).

## Troubleshooting

| Message                 | What to try                                                                  |
| ----------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Invalid key             | Use the API key, not your account password                                   |
| Missing / invalid meter | Confirm MPAN and serial are from the **export** example                      |
| No Agile tariff         | PilotWatt requires Agile Outgoing on this export meter                       |
| Account not found       | If using legacy account-number flows elsewhere, switch to MPAN + serial here |
