# EV charge detection

> Overnight sessions inferred from FoxESS grid import — UI hidden in alpha.

PilotWatt can detect EV charging by monitoring **grid import** from FoxESS during your Intelligent Octopus cheap window. No Hypervolt or vehicle API is required.

<Note>
  **Alpha status:** Detection still runs in the background (daily cron + Settings toggle), but Home / History EV cards are **hidden** until direct charger integration ships. Re-enable in product when Hypervolt support lands.
</Note>

## How it works

1. A daily job runs at **06:00 UTC** for users with EV tracking enabled
2. PilotWatt compares import power to your household baseline overnight (default baseline **0.3 kW**; charge threshold **1 kW** net)
3. Sustained import above threshold → logged as a charge session (start, duration, kWh, estimated cost) in Neon

## Works best with

* Intelligent Octopus import (predictable overnight window)
* Consistent overnight charging pattern
* EV detection enabled in **Settings → EV**

## Coming soon

Direct **Hypervolt Home 2** integration for live charge state and more accurate kWh — see [Supported hardware](/reference/supported-hardware).
